Client-Catered Control of Engineered Spaces with Software-Defined Sensors and Actuators

The concept of software-defined sensing and actuation (SDSA) is explored, as a paradigm for enabling client-catered control of cyber-physical engineered spaces at multiple scales. The paper develops three case studies of client-catered control functions that are enabled by SDSA: the first on transmit power management of a single sensor or actuator node, the second on network-level sensor recruitment and routing in response to a fault event, the third on temperature control for a mobile resident in a building. The control strategies are deployed in a experimental software-defined sensor network which monitors temperature and humidity in a residence.
