Experimental and Computational Study of Added Resistance in Waves for the Development of Bow Hull Forms

When a ship navigates in a seaway with winds and waves, itis known that resistance is increased about 10-40% of the calmwater resistance. The added resistance performance in waves isemphasized to access the powering performance ofcommercial ships with the index of the EEDI_weather inMARPOL Annex IV of IMO MEPC 64. Several concepts ofbow shape have been developed to enhance the performance inwaves. Hirota et al.1) introduced Ax-bow and LEADGE-bowwhich were applied to blunt bow of low-speed full form ships.They reported that the added resistance in waves can bereduced with those bow shapes, especially in short wavelengthranges. Its effectiveness in actual sea was also validated by thefull-scale measurement. Kuroda et al.2) developed STEP(SplayTearing Plate) which is an energy saving device installedabove the waterline at bow to reduce added resistance inwaves and experimentally determined its size and location forthe 5000-unit pure car and truck carrier. Kuroda et al.3)examined the influence of the bow hull form above waterlineon the added resistance in waves through the model test with6500 TEU container ship models which have three differentbow shapes. Guo and Steen4) used the ship model consisted ofthree segments to explore the added resistance distribution.
