Fatigue damage induced by ice loads is a key concern forships operating in ice-covered waters. This paper shows thefatigue damage calculation of a ship structure due to ice loadbased on a numerical simulation. A numerical method tosimulate the ship-ice interaction in level ice is introduced. Thedistributions of load peaks in different ice conditions aredetermined. The structural fatigue stress is determined usingstructural beam theory. According to ice thickness distributionand a proper S-N curve, fatigue damage can be estimatedbased on the Palmgren–Miner’s rule. An example fatiguedamage calculation is presented, and the calculated fatiguedamage reflects the variation in ice conditions.
