PM CEMS versus PM CPMS - What are they, how are they Different, and what are the Regulatory Implications of the Technologies?

EPA has specified continuous monitoring of particulate matter (PM) across many current and pending rules. The monitoring applications range from a continuous emission monitor systems (CEMS) to continuous parametric monitoring systems (CPMS). The acronyms CEMS and CPMS are only different by one letter which makes them confusing, but there are a lot of differences in the two methods. The differences include how they are configured to how their output signals are handled. There have also been different alarm setting methods proposed by EPA for PM CPMS for different rules. This paper will attempt to clear up the confusion by comparing the two methods and showing where they are the same, where they are different and how they are different. It will also address how these differences affect your permitted operation and what you need to know.
