Sustainability Rating Systems for Canadian Civil Engineers

A great focus is being made to ensure that this generation of engineering designs are done with an acute focus on the 'sustainability' of the project, from planning, design, and construction, through long term maintenance and beyond to replacement. A number of sustainability rating systems and tools have been developed and are being used worldwide to aid project teams (engineers, planners, policy makers) in understanding the best management practices that contribute to a more sustainable project. There are a variety of rating systems that are applicable for all types of projects being used in different areas of the globe. This paper will present information on the current and future role of sustainable design in Canada and will provide a general discussion on the structure and content of the various types of rating systems and sustainability tools available. The paper will then discuss how sustainability tools and rating systems and the concepts they are based on can be utilised to the benefit of all the aforementioned parties.
