A research project was conducted to investigate the feasibility of replacing sulfate-resisting cement with locally available fly ash or slog to produce sulfate resistance concrete in northwestern China. This paper presents the durability results (sulfate resistance and impermeability) of the concrete made with varying contents of fly ash or slag. The sulfate resistance and impermeability properties of the sulfate resisting cement concrete (SRCC) were compared to those of ordinary portland cement concrete (OPCC). The test results show that SRCC had a better sulfate resistance than OPCC with the same mix proportions and the improvement in sulfate resistance ranged from 5% to 10%. Adding fly ash could enhance sulfate resistance of concrete, but not as good as adding S95 slag. Adding S75 slag adversely affected sulfate resistance of concrete. The impermeability test results show that fly ash could improve the impermeability of concrete, whereas S75 slag reduced impermeability.
