Computational Analysis of Wall Overtopping due to Historical Typhoons -Towards a Disaster-aware Rehabilitation of Roxas Boulevard Seawall

Roxas Boulevard Seawall, which protects Roxas Boulevard from coastal flooding, was recently overtopped by waves and storm surge from Manila Bay. The economic cost of the damage is largely attributed to the inundation of the road and other infrastructures due to the overtopped and collapsed seawall. In order to find effective engineering solutions, it is important to quantify the waves and water levels that were induced near the seawall by the meteorological conditions. Initial results synthesized from the application of a nonlinear wave model based on available data of water levels and met-ocean forcing are discussed in this paper. The simulations indicate the critical importance of storm surge values and wave approach conditions in determining the overtopping potential of waves on the seawall. A number of possible mitigating solutions are discussed.
