There is a need for a durable, zinc-free, weldable anti-corrosion primer that meets the steel industry's needs. A novel coating is being developed in the WeldaPrime project (European funding: FP7 framework programme) with this aim. In this paper, a brief overview of protective coatings for corrosion control is provided and the key characteristics to provide robust protective performance together with acceptable weld-through capability are identified. The WeldaPrime project is developing candidate weldable primers with low organic content via sol-gel chemistry, with the focus on studying the corrosion protection achievable via a barrier mechanism. Additionally, the addition of cerium-based nano-additives will also be studied to provide additional corrosion protection via active inhibition.
