Environmental Protection Act (EPA), 1986 stipulates that all the manufacturers must treat their effluent (waste water) as per limiting standards before discharging into the natural environment.During synthesis of dihydroxyl ammonium 5,5'-bis tetrazole 1,1 '-diolate abbreviated as TKX-50, a large quantities of effluent is generated which is acidic and hazardous in nature and therefore cannot be discharged into the environment without proper treatment.Literature survey reveals that TKX-50 effluent analysis and its treatment have not been reported so far.It was therefore, thought of interest to collect effluent samples generated during different steps of synthesis of TKX-50 and analyze for environmental tests such as pH, chemical oxygen demand (COD), bio-chemical oxygen demand (BOD), total dissolved solids (TDS) and bioassay test (toxicity to zebra fish survival) followed by treatment of combined effluent.This paper describes results of TKX-50 effluent samples before and after treatment.Present data shows that TKX-50effluent after treatment can be safely discharged on land without any adverse effect on environment.
