Snow samples were collected during campaigns in the Andes of Chile and Antarctic Peninsula. The PAH concentrations were measured in order to evaluate the impact of pollution caused by atmospheric aerosols on mountain water reserves like glaciers. The low PAH concentrations found s in the first horizon of the pit in LPG makes it suitable as a reference site for background sampling. The results presented in this study show experimental evidence of the transport of pollutants from cities to the mountains of the Andes. We hypothesize that these pollutants are products of atmospheric wet and dry deposition on the glaciers, and could increase ablation, accelerating the mass loss of glaciers and changing the albedo, which would finally have an impact on climate.
