A pilot study implementing the dual MAX-DOAS method for measurements of area-averaged fluxes of pollutants was successfully executed. The setup provides a relatively inexpensive and automated way of measuring real-life emissions of NO_2 and HCHO from large industrial complexes. While care should be taken with the selection of measurements sites, and high quality meteorological data should be used in the calculations of fluxes, this type of measurement holds real value for determining the emissions of hard to measure substances, such as HCHO, from large facilities. In order to reduce uncertainties in measured fluxes, a longer study, encompassing the entire year, is recommended. Flux estimates can also be improved by using better meteorological data, for example by high resolution wind profiler LiDAR.
