Village Green Air Monitoring: Expanding Community Awareness of Air Quality through State and Local Agency Partnerships to Implement Self-Powered and Wireless Air Monitoring Stations

The VG prototype was implanted as a research study in 2013, stationed in a location where nearby FEM stationary ozone and PM_(2.5)monitors were already reporting air quality. The results of the research study provided indications that the VG prototype was often highly comparable to the data from the existing monitors. As a result, EPA partnered with state and local agencies to deploy five additional stations as part of VGP-Ⅱ, in order to foster education on air quality through public outreach and participation activities. The VGP-Ⅱ in partnership with state and local agencies will track the research, awareness, and educational components of the project. The research portion will evaluate the abilities of candidate sensors to function over extended time periods under variable environmental conditions. EPA will also track the reliability of the wind turbines as a supplemental source of power over a one year period. The website will allow EPA to track public participation and provide outputs related to awareness and educational measures. Finally, our state and local partners will provide data relative to public outreach efforts with communities that will increase awareness and education of the VGP-Ⅱ and the air quality.
