Polyurethane Semi-Flexible Foam Sealant for Building Fenestration

According to the Residential Energy Services Network [1], proper air sealing can lower an energy bill up to 30%. Fenestrations typically have gaps between the fenestration frames and the supporting structure around the fenestration. The gaps are a source of energy leakage if they are not sealed and insulated. Polyurethane spray foam with insulating and sealing properties is a common and convenient choice for filling these fenestration gaps. The foam needs to be sufficiently flexible, as measured by compressive recovery, to compensate for movement of windows, a result of material expansion and contraction, to which it adheres. This paper will discuss the applications testing required to assess fit for use and certification of flexible OCF foam. In addition results from recent experimental results are described.
