1. CRI does not correlate with preference for the SPDs tested. The two SPDs with highest CRI were not among the top 3 preferred spectra for any of the applications. The spectra receiving highest preference had CRI 80 and 70 and had extra red saturation. 2. Gamut area correlates with preference, on average. However, for the skin application, the white LED spectrum, with CRI 80 and intermediate gamut area, was preferred. A two dimensional measure of color quality, thus, appears to be inadequate for describing user preference over multiple applications. 3. Viewers prefer spectra that increase the saturation of particular object colors. With some exceptions, they generally prefer enhancement of red. Increasing saturation unavoidably decreases color fidelity, and therefor CRI.
