When cleaning today's electronics with low standoff heights and tight pitch leads being able to penetrate around those leads and under the component body to fully remove flux and other process residues is paramount. With many assembly processes using a no-clean flux with the intent to be cleaned the use of aqueous based saponifier is on the rise. The basic purpose of saponifier is to lower the surface tension of the water as well as to aid in softening the residues for removal. The use of tap, RO, or DI water with the saponifier can and will play a role in the end cleanliness results. This paper will investigate the use of water only cleaning on a no clean flux as well as a saponified wash using the variable of tap, RO, and DI water as the carrier.
