The paper is based on physical modelling of a geotechnical structure, namely rigid retaining wall translating horizontally out of granular material (active case). Such an experimental layout gives some freedom to granular material, enough to develop regular strain localization pattern. High resolution digital camera was used to record the granular material deformation and stress response during the wall movement. Double recording: in white normal light and in monochromatic circularly-polarised light was employed, the first one for the purpose of deformation analysis by DIC, the second to give insight into a stress (force) field.
