Based on the laboratory model test of dry soils, the numerical model was established to study dynamic characteristics of coarse granular soils by means of PFC3D (Particle Flow Code in 3 Dimensions). The dynamic impaction during the dynamic compaction was simulated, and the dynamic characteristics of soils and the tamper were studied. The results show the vibration during the dynamic compaction is a kind of instantaneous impaction vibrations, and the attenuation of dynamic stress in the horizontal was faster than that in the vertical. The particles under the tamper moves vertically causing the vertical densification, and the particles at the left side of the tamper moves horizontally leading to the loosing in the soils and flying of some particles. The dynamic characteristics can be well simulated with PFC3D, which is relative to the results from the laboratory model test. The findings of this study provide a new route to study the mechanism and char in the dynamic compaction.
