Any engineering or technology-based degree program should have a "capstone event" to conclude the degree. For graduate degrees, this is a thesis; for baccalaureate degrees, it is a senior research paper; but for the associate degree level in nuclear engineering technology, it is difficult to define this needed experience, as two year programs do not have research reactors or ready access to research-level laboratory equipment. This paper describes the collaborative efforts of the nuclear degree program faculty working with contractor technical staff to develop a state-of-the-art, generic, pressurized water reactor simulator for academic usage as a capstone event.
