Visual inspection is a critical and highly skilled area of work in many high value manufacturing systems. It is currently undertaken by highly trained human operators who are provided with prescribed standards and classifications for assessing defects. However, previous work indicates that operators' inspection methods often deviate from prescribed standards and entail variability in detection rates and strategies. Additionally, an understanding of human skill and acuity in visual inspection will be advantageous when considering the feasibility and appropriation of potential replacement technologies. This paper describes a small initial study investigating human visual search patterns and their effect on defect detection rates.
