Reduction Product Separation by Vacuum Distillation in the Process of Titanium Sponge Preparation

The component of reduction product which is produced in the magnesium reduction process for titanium sponge preparation was analyzed. Saturated vapor pressure value of each component was calculated, and the vacuum dissociation reaction of TiCl_2 and TiCl_3 which produced in reduction reaction were theoretically analyzed based on thermodynamics. The results show that the reduction product is mainly composed by Ti, TiCl_2, TiCl_3, Mg and MgCl_2. The volatility of Mg, MgCl_2, TiCl_2, TiCl_3 is much larger than Ti during vacuum distillation process. TiCl_2 and TiCl_3 will dissociate under vacuum conditions. Industrial experiment shows that high-quality 0_a grade titanium sponge can be obtained through vacuum distillation.
