Advanced Planning A Tool for Closing Capital Effectiveness Gaps

The TAPPI Engineering Process and Project Engineering Committee in late 2012 conducted a survey1 of more than 8000 professionals regarding the capital planning process at their firms. Ninety-four percent of the respondents worked directly for pulp and paper manufactures. The survey identified ten noteworthy project effectiveness gaps. These are: Project scope not well defined Cost forecasting inaccurate Resources and skilled personnel lacking Follow-up and documentation lacking Weak initial justification Long-term focus lacking Good management lacking Insufficient time Experience and training lacking Coordination poor A technique, referred to as advanced planning, brings focus and discipline to the project planning process. This process will be discussed.
