On-line Press Felt Monitoring - Safe and Reliable with Better Process Transparency Enables Real-Time Press Optimization without Safety Hazards

The continuous monitoring of paper machine performance has become immensely important in recent years to ensure consistent product quality at high levels of efficiency and safety. This paper describes one such innovation, the FeltView™ press felt monitoring system, designed for continuous online measurement of individual press felt water content and permeability. This traversing felt monitoring system measures and plots information for both CD profile and MD trend. The data from the instrument enables papermakers to optimize press dewatering with timely felt washing and proper vacuum and shower settings. This optimization tool can improve product quality, felt performance, impartial felt selection, and process efficiency. It can also reduce the amount of energy that pressing and drying operations consume. This paper will introduce the main features and benefits of the monitoring system as well as results from recent installations in North America.
