The application of Single-event Wind Erosion Evaluation Program (SWEEP) on and around Owens Lake has shown it to be a useful tool for estimating sand motion, designing dust control measures, and for evaluating the performance of dust controls once implemented in the field. SWEEP may also be used as a tool to help establish relationships between friction velocity and PM_(10) emissions. Scientifically valid information on soil, surface (the top layer of the soil upon the wind acts), and vegetation conditions is critical in the application of the model. The results from SWEEP modeling can be improved by calibrating the model using data measured in the field. The PI-SWERL application on and around Owens Lake has shown its versatility as a field instrument in terms of its portability, efficiency, and sturdiness. Although the instrument measures emission rates on a small "footprint," the results can be scaled up to the landscape level. In addition, the PI-SWERL provides field measurements that may be used to calibrate and/or verify output from the SWEEP model.
