The thermal investigation of the seal system in interaction with its environment suggests that the flow of the friction heat into oil, seal and shaft is significantly dependent on the test setup, especially the size of the shaft and on the operation conditions like rotational velocity and oil temperature. Approaches of heat distribution solely based on the material conductivity of elastomer and steel do not seem sufficient under this aspect. Furthermore a significant amount of the heat is flowing into the oil, which suggests that heat conduction into the oil must not be neglected. By implementing this thermal network in an existing Finite Element Model, a computational efficient method is found to take the changes of the heat flow into consideration. In future works contact temperature measurements will be conducted to validate the model-based findings in this paper.
