This paper presents an approach for the precise detection of the rising edge for traveling waves (TWs). The high precision is needed in order to accurately estimate the fault location on distribution and transmission overhead lines. The improvement in this two-ended method consists in applying a resonance filter to get the similarity of the TWs from both sides of the line [1]. Besides this, two more methods for detecting TWs are introduced in order to create an appropriate comparison. The necessary signal processing steps and the influences of the environmental measurement conditions are included. The paper shows that the resonance filter approach provides better results in comparison to existing methods.
