Methylal: An Environmentally Friendly Blowing Agent Newly Introduced in North America

Further to the project to phase out HFCs, the choice of physical blowing agents for polyurethane foams becomes limited. Methylal is a new cost-effective option introduced in North America with a lower environmental, health and safety profile. This poster describes Methylal, its properties, a comparison with other available blowing agents, and its use as sole blowing agent and as co-blowing agent with Pentane, Cyclopentane or HFCs. Today Methylal is already used in the production of rigid, flexible, integral skin and microcellular foams. Examples of formulations are given.
