BLEACHING AND/OR DYEING OF COTTON NONWOVEN FABRICS WITHOUT SCOURING (A TALK PRESENTATION)

The USDA-ARS research presented here has demonstrated: 1. A hydroentangled greige cotton nonwoven fabric made at a high water pressure is absorbent and, hence, can be successfully bleached without the Scouring chemicals. This is attained because the hydro-entangling process itself removes some of the greige cotton's natural waxes that repel water and are traditionally removed by the scouring chemicals. 2. A hydroentangled greige cotton nonwoven fabric even made at a relatively low water pressure may still be sufficiently absorbent and, hence, bleachable without scouring, although the fabric whiteness may not be as good as that of a fabric either made at a high water pressure or made by using commercially bleached cotton. 3. A preliminary study has shown that the fabric made at a high water pressure, item # 1 above, may even be dyed satisfactorily w/o scouring.
