摘要

The Strategic Highway Safety Program conducted a large-scale naturalistic driving study (NDS) which instrumented vehicles for 2,800 drivers across six states (Indiana, Pennsylvania, Washington, Florida, New York, and North Carolina). The objective of NDS is to study drivers' naturalistic driving performance and behavior and how they interact with traffic and roadway environment. A data acquisition system collected vehicle characteristics (i.e. speed, acceleration, brake pedal status) and videos with forward and rear views of the roadway, the driver's face and hand position. The dataset includes over 18 million travel miles over two years. The study also includes a roadway information database for the study sites, which can be used in conjunction with the NDS data to evaluate the interaction between driver and roadway. Although intended for safety impact assessment, the dataset is promising source of information for development of drive cycles for passenger vehicles as input to US Environmental Protection Agency's (US EPA) MOtor Vehicle Emission Simulator (MOVES) model or other modal emissions models. Vehicle kinematic data are reported at 10 Hz and include vehicle speed, acceleration, brake status, gas pedal state, and other vehicle variables. The dataset also includes vehicle location (reported at 1 Hz) and a forward view of the roadway. Vehicle position can be combined with the roadway information to determine roadway characteristics such as location and presence of a traffic signal. The forward view can be used to extract level of service, density, volume of surrounding vehicles as well as status of traffic control. The paper discusses advantages and disadvantages to using the dataset for development of drive cycles.
