Horizontal flow bioreactor for treatment of odor and VOCs present in exhausts from municipal sewage plant and industrial installations offers many advantages. These include: potential to use high profile biofilter beds to reduce footprint, high media packing density for tank size reduction and housing multiple processes in a single tank with seamless transition resulting in simpler ducting layout and low pressure drop. Biorem has developed a tank design that prevents bypass, and have used Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling and testing to achieve uniform air velocity in the media bed. The horizontal flow bioreactor requires non-compressible, predominantly spherical and relatively uniform media to minimize settling and bypass. Biorem's XLD biofiltration (BF) media is well suited to this configuration, and long term data by independent researchers confirms its excellent odour removal performance for a biosolids exhaust at 20s empty bed residence time (EBRT). Biorem has also developed biotrickling filtration (BTF) media for horizontal flow design. This paper presents the performance of a pilot and a full scale horizontal flow system. Horizontal flow bioreactor with XLD media provided excellent odour removal performance for both biosolids and primary clarifier exhausts. It can be built in as little as 20% of space required for a vertical flow system.
