ENERGY PURPOSE REDEVELOPMENT OF BROWNFIELD SITES - AN EXAMINATION AND EVALUATION METHOD

Redevelopment of brownfields has gained significant attention in recent years due to political, social and financial reasons. On one hand, such sites are often treated as problematic areas by authorities, where political and financial intervention is necessary. On the other hand, there is a broad agreement that redevelopment of brownfield sites should be encouraged rather than choosing greenfields for new developments. To make such investment feasible, extensive analysis of the conditions of the brownfield and the potential of different energy sources has to be performed. The paper introduces a multi-objective examination and evaluation method, which meets the demands of investors, and provides a basis for in-detail business analysis of the investment. The method does not only focus on the local potential of certain renewable and fossil energy sources, but also aims to fully utilize climatic conditions, existing energy and transport infrastructure of the site, while taking into consideration the legislative boundary conditions as well. A case study is also presented to illustrate the process; the site of a gas power plant is examined, and the key findings and recommendations are listed.
