Performance of power transmission lines has a great impact on reliability of a particular power supply system of a country. Unreliable power transmission lines can even lead to total power failures resulting with great financial losses. The lightning back flashover effects are recognized as one of the major causes of transmission line outages. In the research on lightning resisting level of transmission lines, the definition acquired by standard wave experiment is applied to judge the flashover of lighting over-voltage at both ends of insulators, but the result of lighting protection calculation on the basis of this method is conservative. This paper introduces a model based on continuous leader development. Taking 500kv transmission lines for example and using simulation program software ATP-EMTP to calculate the lighting resisting levels. The lighting resisting levels under different flashover criteria are compared. Results of the research show that comparing with traditional criterion, the model based on the development of continuous leaders is more accurate.
