This paper presents the results of a study aims to evaluate the Loss-of-Excitation (LOE) protection of synchronous generators using a Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS). The tests are performed by the Hardware-In-The-Loop simulation using a numerical relay to evaluate the response of the underexcited generator. Technical data are provided for adjustment of the LOE protection and generator's Underexcitation Limiter (UEL) in order to operate in a coordinated way and without causing improper operation.
