STUDY ON VEGETATED FILTER STRIP APPLICATIONS ON THE SAEMANGEUM AREA IN KOREA

The water quality management is one of the critical issues of Saemangeum area where thehuge tidal reclaimed lands were created by constructing the world’s longest sea dike in Korea.This study was done in project on developing various BMPs to apply on the Saemangeumarea to manage water quality of this region. The vegetated fi lter strips (VFS) experimentalfi eld was constructed in Iksan city located within the Saemanguem area, and consisted of6 experimental plots with two different sizes and slopes. The rainfall-runoff relationshipsand NPS pollution reduction effects of the VFS applications were assessed, and the totalcost for the application of this technique was estimated. The runoff reduction effects ranged14.1~69.3%, and usually delayed runoff occurrence with lower peak fl ow were observed fromthe VFS plots compared to the control plots. The variations of reduction effects between theVFS plots were mainly due to differences in various factors including size and slope of thesource area, cover ratio and width of VFS. The NPS pollution reduction ranged 9.8~94.2%in SS, 24.0~73.3% in T-N, 47.6~80.9% in T-P from the VFS plots. These variations werealso thought to be mainly due to the same reasons as in the runoff characteristics of VFSplots. The total cost of VFS application was estimated considering the costs for constructionand maintenance of VFS and the loss due to foregoing benefi ts of crop cultivation in theVFS area. It was calculated approximately $0.31+ (maintaining cost)/m2 as the total cost ofVFS application for the case of soybean cultivation uplands. The regular mowing of the VFSvegetation found to be important in order to increase cover ratio after transplantation, and tokeep optimum grass height, especially during summer season showing vigorous growth.
