Small hydro-power plants are commonly constructed and operated in many countrieslike United States of America, Canada, Japan, and China as the reliable and economicalrenewable power source. For instance, Japan has been utilizing rubber weirs as the intakedamin many hydro-power plants extending its height up to 6 meters high in Kurotani River inFukushima Prefecture. More than 200 rubber weirs are constructed in South Korea to regulatethe rivers and streams during the drought and fl ood seasons. The objective of this study is toassess small hydro-power generation capacity and economics for the selected fi ve existingsites constructed with movable weirs in some of the streams of South Korea. These sites havethe small hydro-power generation’s effective infl ows range from 29 to 98CMS; effective headsfrom 1.38 to 3.1 meters; designed generation capacities were 989 to 1,872kWh and annualgeneration capacities were estimated at 5,430 ~ 16,400MW/year. As a result of our initialstudies we believe that there exists potentials and possibilities to develop optimized solutionsfor utilizing these rubber weirs to produce clean energy and provide sustainability in use.
