The growing consumer desire for the highest TVimage quality possible is creating increased market demandfor new Ultra High Definition televisions (UHDTVs). Morethan half a million 4K UHDTVs were forecast to shipworldwide in 2013 and this number is projected to grow tomore than 7 million by 2016 [1]. Methods through whichUHDTV can be reliably and efficiently acquired, exchangedand distributed are being trialed and this paper will providekey insights into the technologies which will enable UHDTVcontent. "True" 4K UHDTV will be described and how it willachieve a more immersive viewing experience than today'sHDTV. The overall UHDTV ecosystem readiness will bediscussed, including the new High Efficiency Video Codingstandard (HEVC, also known as H.265 and MPEG-H Part2) Range Extensions, which specifically were created forhigh quality content acquisition, exchange and distribution. To give a sense of bandwidth requirements, lab test resultswill be reviewed that compare the efficiency of HEVC toAVC, and what the impact will be for the higher frame ratesrequired for true 4K UHDTV.
