Many pulp and paper mills use pure oxygen for delignification, ozone bleaching and closed-basin wastewater treatment. Pure oxygen can also be used to supplement open-basin aerobic wastewater treatment. Since pure oxygen can support utilization rates (mg O2/L/h) that are up to five times higher than that achievable with typical air systems, the addition of pure oxygen can increase plant capacity without basin expansion or the installation of additional power. This paper provides an example that demonstrates the effect of pure oxygen supplementation on the annualized capital and operating cost for a wastewater treatment plant that expanded oxygenation capacity from 12 to 17 metric tonnes per day without increasing aeration basin size or adding additional power.
