This paper describes the current control system network layout and implementation in oil & Gas, chemical and petrochemical process plants. It options includes the details of various types of automation networks such as Modbus, Foundation Field bus, Profibus, Device Net etc.; as well as a systematic methodology for implementation of these networks based on plant size and requirements : The present day automation networks consist of both dedicated local area and wide area networks to link the operators, engineers and management personnel for performing process monitoring, control and integrated plant wide enterprise operations such as accounting, auditing, product storage and custody transfer functions of an industrial plant in a seamless and cost effective manner Generally the local area automation networks are located within a close geographical area but some auxiliary equipment and subsystems may span thousands of miles away from the main plant and so are connected with many wide area networks. In addition, the central control center contains various engineering and operator workstations, additional hardware and software to perform the process control and monitoring of local and remote plant equipment and other auxiliary units. The Control systems may include DCS, PLC, SCADA, Analyzer, Compressor and other control subsystems. The interconnecting device hardware and software may include various networked PCs, servers, operational and historical data bases and telecommunication systems and networks. All these are securely connected over a large group of both dedicated secure automation networks and general purpose companywide enterprise networks This paper describes how these automation networks are implemented by making use of network and telecommunication system interfaces including copper and Fiber Optic cables, local and wide area networks, network devices such as hubs, switches, bridges and routers. In order to cover the above topics, this paper contains the following sections. 1. Automation Network Overview 2. Basic Network Design 3. Network topology 4. Network Protocols 5. Various types of Automation networks 6. Current Implementation Strategies 7. Telecommunication Networks.
