UPDATING TO GREEN: LEED EBOM CERTIFICATION OF THE BONILLA SCIENCE HALL AT THE UNIVERSITY OF THE INCARNATE WORD

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the global benchmark for measuring building sustainability. One subset, EBOM (Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance, pronounced "E-Bomb"), addresses the implementation of sustainable practices and the reduction of the environmental impact with existing buildings. This descriptive study details the work of Engineering Management students as they attempted to establish the performance baseline data for the Bonilla Science Hall at UIW. The students surveyed the building and created templates to collect data for a) building site maintenance programs, b) water and energy use, c) environmentally preferred products and practices d) sustainable purchasing policies, e) waste stream management, and f) ongoing indoor environmental quality. Future capstone classes will follow up on the baseline data with implementation plans for the proposed changes in operations and management of the building.
