REVIEW PROCESSES AND ITS EFFECT ON LIVING PSA - BENCHMARKING AND INCREASED EFFICIENCY OF REVIEW PROCESSES

Review of PSA studies is very important. Slow review processes may however result in PSA studies being not up to date, not reflecting the unit as built and not constituting a living PSA. Each PSA study (PSA model and PSA documentation) at Forsmark Nuclear Power Plant goes through a complete update every two years. The update covers new plant data, increased scope of the PSA, plant modifications, changed operating procedures, increased level of detail, etcetera. This implies that the PSA model is updated as well as most of the PSA documentation and its appendices, a total of several hundred documents. All of this is then subjected to a number of review steps: review by the PSA team, primary safety review, independent safety review and occasionally regulatory review by the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM). Several challenges and problems have been identified regarding the PSA review processes at Forsmark Nuclear Power Plant, largely related to the large amount of calendar time used when reviewing the updated PSA studies. To increase the performance of the PSA review processes at Forsmark Nuclear Power Plant a number of changes to the processes have been implemented. In the coming years more changes are likely to be implemented as a result of benchmarking activities as well as own work refining the processes. This paper aims at describing the current situation, challenges and problems, on-going changes to the review processes and benchmarking activities.
