Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway (BNSF) has partnered with Amtrak and the State of North Dakota to raise BNSF's existing Devils Lake Subdivision Main Line track to prevent ongoing flooding in the area from shutting down the track and making it impassable for the two Amtrak trains that pass across the stretch of track every day. During periods of high water at Devils Lake, the existing track structure becomes inundated and Amtrak is forced to reroute its trains en route from Seattle, WA to Chicago, IL. This detour adds costly mileage and time to the trip.
