Establishing a secure Internet connection to a paper machine quality control system (QCS) allows large amounts of process and QCS operational data to be collected, stored, and analyzed remotely. With the recent adoption of Ethernet communications at the scanning sensor level, along with the use of sensors such as accelerometers in the scanner, an unprecedented amount of QCS data is available for analysis. Continuous, near real time, monitoring of the performance of cross and machine direction controls, monitoring of sensor standardization data, and predictive sensor diagnostics complement, or partially replace, a traditional onsite QCS maintenance regimen. Potential problems with the QCS scanner, sensors, or controls, such as misalignment of cross direction actuators to the scanner, can be identified much sooner than they would typically be detected onsite. It has been found that remote QCS monitoring can reduce maintenance costs by as much as fifty percent in addition to preventing production losses due to off specification paper.
