The coastal cliff at Netanya, Israel, is up to 54 m high and consists of soft calcareous sandstone ("Kurkar"), irregularly alternating with relatively thin layers of clayey sand and silty sand. The cliff suffers from constant erosion by the elements and slides happen frequently. During the years sporadic attempts to stabilize specific sections have met with varying degrees of success. Because of the touristic and real estate value of the plateau on the top, the municipality has embarked on a systematic program to stabilize the whole length of the cliff, combined with widening the beach through the construction of detached breakwaters. A small pilot section has so far been stabilized, and the most critical section, 2,700 m long, is in advanced stages of final design and building permit application.
