The earthquake induced ground motions are transient and nonstationary. Both their amplitude and frequency content vary with time. Analysis and design of structures need to consider these nonstationary characteristics. In studying time series, several methods have been developed and used by researchers and practitioners. Here, a comparison of Fourier Transform (FT), Short Time Fourier Transform (STFT), Hilbert Huang Transform (HHT), and Wavelet Transform (WT) are presented.
