Current seismic provisions for determining the amount of transverse reinforcement in beam-column joints vary from one code to another. Moreover, the seismic provisions in current codes were developed for the most severe earthquake effects. There is a lack of an accepted designed method for determining the amount of lateral steel in areas of low to moderate seismicity where the ductility demand may be lower than that in areas of higher seismic activity. This paper will provide an overview of simulated seismic loads tests conducted on reinforced concrete beam-column joint subassemblages at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) during recent years. Research conducted at NTU is aimed at examining the ductility and behaviour of moment-resisting frame with limit ductility in order to develop detailing guide lines for areas of low to moderate to seismicity.
