Hybrid masonry structural systems are composed of steel frames that work in conjunction with reinforced concrete masonry wall panels to resist lateral loads. Current applications of this new system have been limited to areas of the United States where wind loads dominate and the seismic hazard is low. However, recent studies suggest that the application of hybrid masonry bracing systems may be extended to include higher seismic regions. This ongoing research is funded by the National Science Foundation under the NEESR program. As interest in hybrid masonry structural systems grows, the need increases for a comprehensive design procedure. Currently, a capacity-based design procedure is under development, and this paper describes aspects of the preliminary framework. Capacity-based design provides a tool for sizing individual components, including steel columns, beams, connector elements, and the masonry panels to force ductile limit states that lead to favorable global performance. Once completed, the full design procedure will serve as a beneficial tool for designers and further the development of the hybrid masonry system and the range of its application.
