The new paradigm of performance-based fire engineering (PBFE), with its systematic approach to identifying building performance objectives, quantitative structural analysis to verify that these objectives have been achieved, and management of uncertainties provides incentives for engineered alternatives to traditional prescriptive approaches keyed to the ASTM Standard E119 fire test. Recent advances in fire science and engineering have made it possible to consider realistic fire scenarios and fire effects on the building structural system as part of a risk-informed design process. This paper describes an approach to developing reliability-based resistance criteria for use in practical structural engineering approaches to fire safety assurance.
