CHP and CCHP Modeling for Policy Development on Selling and Not-Selling Electricity to Network

Combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) systems utilize one single source of energy to meet electricity, heating, and cooling loads. As opposed to electricity driven chillers that may be used in conjunction with combined heating and power (CHP) systems, it is common to utilize thermally activated equipment such as absorption chillers in CCHP systems for meeting required cooling load. While the capital costs of CHP and CCHP systems are comparatively higher than conventional separate heat and power systems, their proper selection and optimal sizing could result in shorter capital recovery period and lower cost of energy supply. Aside from the economical advantages due to the reasonable use of input energy, CHP and CCHP systems are also highly effective for achieving higher operational efficiencies and in preservation of primary energy resources. The objective of this study is to present the modeling procedure needed for analyses of CHP and CCHP systems under the conditions of selling and not selling electricity to utility.
