Understanding the influence of human factors on the culture of an organisation provides a strong impetus for improving its sustainabil-ity. The methodology proposed by BS 8900, the primary standard for sustainable development in the UK and the first sustainable development (SD) standard in the world, asks users to list the principles with which they identify, such as inclusivity, integrity, stewardship and transparency. A case study illustrates how the use of BS 8900 can lead to tangible improvements in the sustainability of an organisation. Adopting BS 8900 should improve awareness of the strategy, context and effects of the organization. But most ambitiously, it should also change the culture within the organisation.
