LEAN,CLEAN AND GREEN: A CASE STUDY IN A PHARMACEUTICAL CLEANING DEPARTMENT

Interventions that reduce an organisation's ergonomics risks can also reduce their environmental impact. This case study demonstrates how the major redesign of a work process and area tackled ergonomics, environmental, industrial hygiene and quality concerns. Initiatives undertaken in the central cleaning department of a pharmaceutical company included a new layout of the area, and new work processes and equipment to facilitate cleaning and handling items. This resulted in significant improvements to the ergonomics risks, productivity and quality, and a reduction in solvent use and the requirement for PPE. This win-win intervention allowed ergonomics, environmental, industrial hygiene, productivity and quality concerns all to be addressed.
