Edge Manipulation Attacks for Distributed Control of TCLs in Microgrid: Impacts and Mitigation

The building-microgrid community is a localized cluster consisting of controllable loads, renewable energy generation, and storage systems. The integration of renewable energy sources (RESs) and load fluctuations within the microgrid community would bring the challenges to its steady ancillary support for the main power grid. One potential solution is to control the thermostatically controlled loads (TCLs) to supplement demand response due to the large aggregated power consumption of TCLs. This paper proposes a distributed event-triggered control framework for TCLs in building-microgrid communities under edge manipulation attacks. Based on different attack intensities, two types of edge manipulation attacks are modeled: a) mild edge manipulation attacks and b) severe edge manipulation attacks. The corresponding impacts of these two attacks on the fair power and also the comfort state sharing among the TCLs are illustrated. Additionally, from both the control level and also the communication topology level, key recommendations to mitigate the negative influences of these two types of attacks are formulated and discussed in detail, respectively.
